About the Business

Faraway Farm Alpacas

Faraway Farm Alpacas, located at 1307 Baptist Church Road in Yorktown Heights, New York, is a picturesque farm nestled in the historic Hudson Valley. Home to award-winning huacaya alpacas known for their soft, colorful fleece, this family-owned property has been in the Blumberg family since 1951.

Owners Leda Blumberg and Steve Cole continue the farming tradition, tending to their alpaca herd and Icelandic Horses with love and care. The farm features organic vegetable gardens, fruit trees, berry bushes, shitake logs, and flowers, creating a sustainable and enchanting environment for both animals and visitors.

Just 40 miles north of New York City, Faraway Farm Alpacas is a popular location for fashion shoots, weddings, theater productions, and more. Leda and Steve also offer educational tours, private events, and workshops throughout the year, sharing their passion for alpacas and sustainable farming practices.

Their journey into the world of alpacas began in 2007 when they fell in love with the charming creatures while passing a herd grazing by the roadside. Now, their alpacas spend their days peacefully grazing on the hillside meadows and are shorn once a year for their health and for their luxurious fleece. The farm sends their fleeces to a New England mill to be turned into yarn, which is used to create beautifully crafted apparel. Visit Faraway Farm Alpacas to experience the magic of these gentle animals and the beauty of sustainable farming practices.

"We missed part of the tour but Leda and Steve were very kind. They took some and still brought us to the alpaca so we didn't miss out. We were able to get close to the alpacas and see how majestic they were. We even got to stick around to see them walk back to their barn. Thank you for the great time! We are definitely coming back next year to see them with their full fleece :)"

"My mom and I had a wonderful time meeting Leda, Steve, and their lovely alpacas. Leda is an open book on alpacas, sharing the history of the farm, alpaca lineage, and alpaca behaviors . After sending Leda an email expressing interest, she provided a couple times to visit (generally weekends in the early afternoon) and was accommodating to our reschedules. During our tour we visited the female alpaca pen and got to observe them. During our visit they were grazing and some curious alpacas would come closer and inspect our group (sometimes they nap). Alpacas are so cute, even more so in person. I had plenty of opportunities to take photos and observe. There were even two alpacas receptive to petting!"
