"We met Steve about four years ago when we went to his studio to look at his lamp collection. We bought our first lamp and began discussing some custom work ideas for our new home. He was able to take the ideas we described and provide drawings, in great detail, of several options which we choose exactly what we wanted. This is one of his greatest services, as you may ideas of what you may want, but they are not completely formed. Seeing them visually enabled us to define and refine exactly what we wanted. Today, we have 10 pieces in our home (lamps, chandeliers, fireplace screen, candle centerpiece, and several custom items), including a custom chandelier that hangs in our outside entry that helps define the house in the way we want. "My husband and I built a custom Craftsman home in the mountains of North Carolina. One of the most distinctive elements of our home is a 12’ tall by 17’ wide rock wall in our living room with a large center fireplace. The fireplace opening is arched and impossible to fit with standard doors and screens. We visited several local blacksmiths and no one was able to understand our needs or design and build the doors we envisioned. We met Steve Joslyn at a local craft fair, looked through his design book and realized we had found our master blacksmith! Steve worked with us providing suggestions and was happy to listen to and incorporate our ideas. The opening is quite large and the structures had to be substantial and built to fit an opening that wasn’t “quite” symmetrical (being hand-built and poured). Our doors and fire screens turned out beautifully, exceeding our expectations. Our visitors are invariably blown away by the spectacular doors of our rock fireplace . And because the doors are well fitted, we are able to enjoy frequent fires in the evenings without heat loss through our chimney when we close the fireplace down. Since we were so happy with Steve’s first creation, we asked him to provide doors and screens for our much smaller master bedroom fireplace. The scale of that design was perfect for the room and incorporated his beautiful pinecones for which he is justifiably famous.
