About the Business

Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary

The Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary, located at 1 Playland Parkway in Rye, New York, is a beautiful park and tourist attraction dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the sanctuary. Run by the Friends of Read Wildlife Sanctuary, a non-profit organization, the sanctuary covers 179 acres along the shore of Long Island Sound. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the sanctuary, which is located along a migratory flyway and home to a variety of wildlife.

In addition to exploring the sanctuary, visitors can also purchase note cards featuring winning photos from the Seek Sanctuary Photo Contest. These cards are a great way to support the Friends of Read Wildlife Sanctuary and take home a piece of the sanctuary's beauty.

Throughout the year, the sanctuary hosts events and educational programs, such as learning about squirrels and their foraging habits or experiencing a solar eclipse and its impact on the weather. Visitors can also learn about the history of the sanctuary, including the remnants of the Van Rensselaer Estate and the Benjamin F. Packard Boat Spine.

Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, the Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary offers something for everyone to enjoy.

"Love Edith Read sanctuary. Fantastic weekend programs for all ages as well as summer camps. I got to experience a seining net with my daughter. A walk in the bamboo forest learning about Bamboo with the fantastic park staff member Scott."

"Easy trails for beginners through fields, marshes and forests. Great for birding. Nice views of the water. You can see deer and many birds including ospreys. The nature center has some great displays and often sponsors photo contests, etc . Great for a half day to explore nature or a few hours."

"Beautiful place that is a birders paradise. There are some nesting ospreys right now and a herd of wild turkeys. Lots of water fowl and several short hiking trails around the small lake."

"This is a very pleasant and easy to navigate wildlife sanctuary. It lies just beyond Playland Park, so you sort of have to drive through its large parking area to access. The sanctuary has its own very small lot but if it's full you can park closer to Playland. It offers scenic hiking trails with great views of Playland Lake and the Long Island Sound. It's a pretty small area so you can't get lost and most people will not find strenuous."
