IU Ien A Es ( AUBURN — A new study released by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Education Policy Center shows that the state’s First Class Pre-K program continues to excel in providing high-quality experiences for Alabama’s four-year-olds. The study, which was conducted by the UAB researchers Craig A. Mason, Ph.D., and Tasia M. Male, Ph.D., found that First Class Pre-K significantly improves school readiness in math and reading when compared to students who did not participate in the program. The statewide study found that students who participated in First Class Pre-K performed higher on math and reading assessments than children who did not participate in the program. The study also found that the achievement gap that exists at the beginning of the pre-k year is nearly closed by the end of the pre-k year. First Class Pre-K is Alabama’s voluntary pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds. It is the nation’s highest quality state-funded pre-kindergarten program for four-year-olds, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research. The program is administered by the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education. “First Class Pre-K is a proven program that prepares our children for success in kindergarten and beyond,” said Jeana Ross, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education. “This new study further validates the positive impact that First Class Pre-K has on school readiness.” The study found that First Class Pre-K students scored higher on the Star Early Literacy assessment and the Star Math assessment at the end of the pre-k year compared to students who did not participate in the program. The study also found that the achievement gap that existed at the beginning of the pre-k year was nearly closed by the end of the pre-k year. “This study shows that First Class Pre-K is working for Alabama’s children,” said Dr. Craig A. Mason, Director of the UAB Education Policy Center. “First Class Pre-K is one of the most effective educational programs in the state of Alabama. It is helping to close the achievement gap and prepare our children for success in kindergarten and beyond.” The study also found that First Class Pre-K students who were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, a common measure of poverty, scored higher on the assessments at the end of the pre-k year than students who were not eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. This is important because research has shown that students from low-income families often start kindergarten behind their peers in math and reading. “First Class Pre-K is helping to level the playing field for our students from low-income families,” said Secretary Ross. “This study shows that First Class Pre-K is making a difference in the lives of our children.” First Class Pre-K is available to all four-year-olds in Alabama. The program is offered at public schools, private schools, faith-based centers, Head Start centers, and other community-based preschool settings. The Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education is currently accepting pre-registration applications for First Class Pre-K for the 2019-2020 school year.
