Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest

The Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, located at 2581 Purdum Mill Road in Appomattox, Virginia, is a park and tourist attraction managed by the Virginia Department of Forestry. The agency's mission includes the prevention and suppression of wildfires through education and quick response efforts. The forest covers 19,513 acres in Appomattox and Buckingham counties and is managed for sustainable timber production, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, and outdoor recreation.

Within the forest, visitors can enjoy the Slate River Reservoir, Holliday Lake, Holliday Creek, and numerous streams. Multi-use trails provide recreational opportunities, while three picnic shelters are available for visitors. The forest is near historical sites like Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park and features rock formations along Holliday Creek and the Appomattox River.

The ABSF has a diverse range of forest types, with loblolly pine being the largest species group. The forest is used for research by institutions like Virginia Tech and the U.S. Geological Survey, and has benefited from scientific forest management practices to improve soil quality, water quality, and biodiversity.

Visitors are encouraged to practice a "leave-no-trace" ethic and wear blaze orange or pink during hunting seasons. The forest does not have restrooms or trash cans, but parking is available at the Carter Taylor Trailhead. The ABSF continues to be a valuable resource for education, research, and outdoor recreation in Virginia.
