"Went on a hike to the falls from the paid parking area ($3), after that went on the cradtree meadows 4x4 trail to the parking area and had a blast. 2018 jeep grand cherokee with falken wildpeak at3 trails had no issues. Any car that is at least awd can make it to the parking lot. Alil bumpy, with a few small water crossing!!!!!!"
"04/02 - From pavement to Meadows parking lot has had some maintenance and is in pretty good condition. Very twisty and mostly single lane with a few passing places. I imagine you'd have to be careful and it'd be uncomfortable but I saw Sedans in the Meadows parking lot. The Meadows parking lot has a restroom that is open April thru November, which was welcome. You've got numerous hiking options from here, the falls, AT to either Priest Shelter or spy rock. The 4x4 trail after the Meadows parking lot gets serious real quick. After crossing a fairly deep stream and passing a few dispersed camp sites it hit a steep uphill, about half way up is a series rock obstacle. I'm sure a Wrangler on 33"s would tackle it no problem but for my Subaru I'd need a spotter and probably some rock ramp building. There looks as if there's a way around it but it's super narrow because of a neighboring tree. With a spotter maybe thisnwouldve been my route to take but you won't fit a full size truck thru there. As many have said if you continue down this trail (if you've made it over this gatekeeper!) You'll eventually hit a gate which blocks the part of the trail that crosses private property."
"Fun trail but apparently even though it is public land a landowner near by put metal gates up 1/3 up the trail which will force you to turn around."
"VDOT has done some work on the road (looks like they are adding some pull outs), there are two stream crossing at .5 and 1.2 miles in. The road is more of a ground clearance issue than a traction issue. The second stream crossing at 1.2 miles is the most difficult (due to clearance). VDOT just dumped a bunch of river rocks in the stream bed to help out. All the spur roads off to the left and right eventually come to camping areas and in most cases 4WD is required (14 day camping limit). You pass Cash Hollow 4WD road on your right at 3.1 miles (park and hike up this road to the AT if you want to head south on the trail to Spyrock), Crabtree Meadows parking area is at about 0.5 miles further. The last 0.1 mile prior to the parking area is steep and sometimes muddy, if it’s raining hard 4WD is recommended. You can alway park at one of the campsite pull outs prior to the steep part and hike down to Crabtree Meadows. At the Meadows hike up past this area to the AT if you want to go north on the trail towards the Priest, hike down to the top of Crabtree falls from the Meadows parking area. Not recommended for low clearance vehicles (like a sports car). At the Crabtree Meadows parking area, there is a sign that says “road ahead closed, private property”. This is because if you continue up the 4WD road to the saddle and AT crossing, it continues down toward Piny River and private property. There are literally hundreds of camping areas with water in and around Crabtree Meadows....****update**** the bathroom at Crabtree Meadows parking area is locked closed."
"The 4x4 trailhead has a sign stating that the road is closed ahead at private property. We took this to mean the 4x4 trail past the parking lot for Crabtree Falls has been shut down and did not explore further."
