"I hate to offer such criticism, but I unfortunately had a highly disappointing experience with Dr. Sampat— one that jeopardized my health. I will preface by saying this is a larger issue amongst the medical community, and not necessarily specific to his practice. However, my bad experience is the result of Dr. Sampat denying me an iron infusion, despite my ferritin (best indicator of iron deficiency) being incredibly low, coupled with my inability to tolerate oral iron due to severe stomach upset. I had proven to Dr. Sampat that my ferritin was AT BEST in the 20s even after heavy oral iron supplementation for nearly 9 months, and I was still refused an iron infusion. To make matters worse, I was told to see a gynecologist as a next step, even after I stated on the record that I am not interested in birth control to reduce blood loss. While I have a lot of empathy for the different constraints and incentives doctors operate under, it is difficult to feel like this isn’t another classic case of a doctor refusing to take a woman’s complaints (and lab results) seriously, and instead telling them to go to the gynecologist/get on birth control. I felt that I wasn’t listened to, and that he wasn’t privy to the wealth of research that explicitly highlights how harmful it can be to allow a patient to continue living their life with such a severe iron deficiency. Again, this refusal to understand and properly treat the most common nutrient deficiency (that also happens to affect almost exclusively women) is an issue within the medical community at large and not unique to Dr. Sampat. However, I would expect a well-renowned hematologist to know and do better. I am only 23 and have felt like I’m on my death bed for years due to my iron deficiency. To corroborate my conviction that I received poor care (and the research), I scheduled an appointment with a different hematologist in the area two weeks later and was immediately given an iron infusion. I feel fantastic and firmly believe I am on the road to recovery now that I’ve found a doctor who knows 1) how debilitating iron deficiency is 2) that it can be easily and simply treated with infusions."
