About the Business
Tawes Garden, located at 580 Taylor Avenue in Annapolis, Maryland, is a charming public garden situated on the grounds of the Tawes State Office Building, home to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This five-acre garden showcases representations of Maryland's diverse geographic regions, including a Western Maryland forest, a streamside environment, and an Eastern Shore peninsula. Visitors can enjoy pleasant ponds, a variety of plantings, and a raised planter with plants of different textures and fragrances. Admission to the garden is free, and guided tours can be arranged by reservation.
The garden is named in honor of Mrs. J. Millard Tawes, a former first lady of Maryland, who was known for her love of music, cooking, and hospitality. The garden site was once a flat cinder lot and served as the location for the West Annapolis carnival for many years. Today, it offers a peaceful retreat for visitors to enjoy nature and learn about the state's natural resources.
The Department of Natural Resources is committed to preserving, protecting, and enhancing Maryland's natural resources for future generations. The garden serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship. Visitors can also access resources such as the National Human Trafficking Hotline and the fraud hotline operated by the Maryland General Assembly's Office of Legislative Audits. Whether you are looking to explore the garden's diverse plant life or learn more about environmental protection, Tawes Garden offers a unique and educational experience for all.
Reviews
"Nice quiet spot to walk in the shade. There are some benches if you want to eat outside. There is a small parking lot near Taylor Avenue and Rowe Boulevard."
"The garden was not well-maintained during the pandemic. It may look nicer with spring blooms, but it is not worth driving out to see the garden in the summer."
"My only interest in this park is for bird watching. The flowers are beautiful and well maintained, but it's quite a small park in a busy government park, and there's many places to see flowers. You can actually do quite well here during migration, especially on weekends and holidays when parking is easy and there's no one else in the park. There was a very reliable Red Shouldered Hawk nest here for a while, but the tree had to be removed."
"I just went earlier today - It was about 20 degrees (Fahrenheit, as it is the middle of December), and despite the wintery look it really was a gorgeous little nature walk. The gift shop is small, and there's not much on offer, but it seems to be a typically underfunded little touristy area - It'd be great to do lunch and then sit out on the benches and look at the ponds when the weather is warmer."
"The gardens are very well maintained by an under served, part-time staff. Enjoy a walking tour with Lisa S. to learn all about the amazing variety of habitats our lovely state has!"
