"Erected in 1894, this is actually the 3rd building of Gilmanton Academy, a historic school, opened in 1797 as a private school. The two previous Academy buildings on the same site both burned; first in 1808, & the 2nd in 1894. When the 2nd building was destroyed, all that remained of virtually all the property were a handful of books, & a Piano. The new school was designed by Bodwell and Sargent of Concord at no charge. During the construction of this 3rd building, classes were held in the principal's home. One of the last private academy buildings to be built in the state, which had ten years earlier required towns to fund secondary education. The last Gilmanton Academy graduation was held in 1910, by 1915 all hope to revive the private school was lost. The Academy trustees agreed to lease and eventually gave over the building to the Gilmanton School district, and it operated as a public school from 1916 to 1966. A new modern school was built, and the property was transferred to its current owners, the Town of Gilmanton. the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983."
