About the Business

East Point Sanctuary

East Point Sanctuary, located in Biddeford, Maine, United States, is a 27-acre park and tourist attraction known for being one of the best birding locations in southern Maine. With over 260 different bird species spotted within the sanctuary, it is a haven for bird enthusiasts. In the summer, visitors can see birds nesting in the forests and meadows, including Black-capped Chickadees, Gray Catbirds, and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Offshore, the waters off the point are a feeding ground for several species of tern, Common Eider, Northern Gannett, Black Scoter, and other seabirds.

During the winter months, the sanctuary is visited by species such as Common Loon, Black Guillemot, Bufflehead, Razorbill, Long-tailed Duck, and Snowy Owls. The sanctuary is free and open to the public year-round, from dawn to dusk, but dogs are not allowed as they can disrupt wildlife. Parking is limited at the end of Lester B. Orcutt Blvd., with room for about 6 cars.

Visitors are asked to be respectful of private landowners and the golf club while visiting the sanctuary. The trail along the perimeter of the point offers rare public access to the Maine coast, with views of Wood Island Lighthouse, the rocky shore, and coastal habitat against the backdrop of Saco Bay and the Gulf of Maine. The trail is approximately 1.6 miles round trip, with benches along the path for resting and bird watching.

Maine Audubon, the organization behind East Point Sanctuary, works to conserve Maine's wildlife and habitat through education, conservation, and action. Visit East Point Sanctuary for a peaceful and informative experience in nature.

"Beautiful sanctuary. We love coming here and just walking alongside the ocean. It's so peaceful out here. Very clean."

"Excellent place to see a quintessential stretch of New England coast. There is no admission. Just a short walk down a beautiful trail to several beach access points. This is not a beach for swimming."

"A fairly flat path that leads to the waters edge where you can either navigate across the rocky shore or play it safe along the flat trail. I would give it a difficulty of 1.5 out of 5 - it is not very long but the views go on forever."

"Fantastic place to walk right along the ocean. Easy trails, constant ocean views. Walking around to the far side of the sanctuary, you get a gorgeous view of Wood Island Light. At low tide, you can walk down to the rock beach and see some great stuff in the tidal pools. Parking can be tricky, though."

"Wonderful! 0.8 mile trail to the point where you can see wood's island lighthouse. As soon as we began approaching the point we heard the hells. Waves breaking, bells, lighthouse - it was a Sanctuary. Maybe motion detection? It was not the top of the hour when the bells began playing. There is a bench as the.point, so it was a nice place to sit and relax."
