The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Gatehouse, located at Refuge Road in Newbury, Massachusetts, is a popular tourist attraction and park. Please note that as of April 1, the majority of the refuge beach is closed to protect nesting piping plovers and other shorebirds, with only a small section of beach open at Lot 1. Visitors are asked to respect all signs, ropes, and gates during this time.
The refuge offers marsh-side access and various trails for visitors to explore. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge aims to conserve and restore fish, wildlife, and plant resources for the benefit of present and future generations. Visitors can learn more about the refuge by joining one of the programs or visiting during open hours.
Various recreational activities are available at the refuge, and passes can be purchased on-site with cash or check. Alternatively, passes can be purchased online. The refuge periodically closes due to capacity and management requirements, but there are other local beaches and recreation areas to explore.
The Habitat Management Plan provides guidance on managing priority species, habitats, and ecosystems at the refuge. The goal is to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the benefit of the American people. Please note that the refuge does not guarantee that linked websites comply with accessibility requirements and does not endorse or recommend them.

"An amazing place! Awesome they accept National Parks Annual Pass! Because we visited 2-3 times each day for the 2.5 days we were visiting the area. Caught two incredible sunsets, tried for a sunrise but the gate wasn’t open yet so we went nearby on the beach but it was all fog anyway haha. The boardwalk was amazing. Just an absolutely gorgeous area. Lots of wildlife as well!"
"One of the best place to visit in Massachusetts if you are a nature lover. It gets more beautiful in the morning and evening times. Plenty of trails, beach access, bird watching, sand dunes, deciduous vegetation and many more. You shouldn’t miss sunset from one of the observation towers."
"A little slice of heaven!! This place is so serene and tranquil! You feel like you are in another world. The beach is so sandy and you can still find shells and sand dollars scattered around. The boardwalks over the dunes are a beautiful walk to the beach and there are more boardwalks throughout the wildlife sanctuary through small woods and out into the marshes for some enjoyable birdwatching! Parking is $5.00 for the day and bathrooms are onsite. (Extremely clean!!!)"
"Really nice beach with a parking lot that is a short walk from the parking lot. We paid $5 for parking (cash only). If there is no parking attendant then you can just grab an envelope at the entrance and rip off the slip and put the money in a dropbox and display the slip on the windshield (at least that is what I did). FYI there are no showers to rinse off after you're done. There was a water filling station inside the information center by the bathrooms but they are not open all day. Overall pretty good experience."
"We visited the park on Juneteenth and were pleasantly surprised that it was free for the holiday! The gentleman working the entrance booth was incredibly nice and informative. The beach and boardwalk was beautiful. Great way to connect with nature!"
