Reviews
"Winterthur is a day long visit and requires a lot of walking stairs and hills. You should be fit for it or do it over two days. If you drive there and have people who cannot walk a lot drive to the visitor center and drop them off. From there they can take the shuttle to the house. Parking lot is a bit far and is a bit of a challenging walk for people who can’t walk far and steadily to get to the visitor center where you must go first to check in whether or not you have tickets. Best way is buy general admission get there about 10:30 for the self guided house tour and a gallery tour on the upper floors of the house. Take the shuttle from the house to the cafe and Eat lunch take the shuttle back to the house and do the more to explore tour and the closer look tour. These enhance your visit and you get to see floors not available for general admission. If you want to tour the grounds then this is a two day tour. The guides are conservationist students and knowledgeable docents and well versed in the many artifacts kept in this house. This house only exists now as a repository for the collections of Henry DuPont. This is a terrific way to explore American collections of furniture and art and crafts. Well worth the price, do consider being a member if you have a family going and are buying the general admission tour the more to explore tour and the closer look tour. I strongly recommend both the More to Explore and Closer Look tours for the most rewarding visit."
"Around Christmas time it’s magical everywhere because of the decorations and festive feelings thus most of the museums look different and you can’t give ordinary reviews. I came to visit Winterhur Museum, Garden and Library on a rainy day and unfortunately I couldn’t walk around the property which is huge, so I used transfer bus that is provided free of charge. Right now the castle has exhibition dedicated to African-American designer Ann Lowe, her work presented in the gallery. It’s really a lot to see if you want to spend 2-3 hours here. This place is not so crowded as Longwood gardens (especially now Christmas time) so you can enjoy yourself wondering around."
"Talk about taking a step into history. This place is amazing. The grounds are gorgeous, even in winter and the buildings are so intriguing. If you love nature and also looking at some amazing architecture, this is your place. The staff here is very knowledgeable and they make it very easy to explore. Ton of parking. Take the tram ride for some great insights."
"Spectacular house and grounds. The size of the house is quite impressive and it is well maintained. You only walk through the fourth and fifth floors on the self guided tour but what you see is splendid. It is a collection of furniture that the du Pont owner collected during his life with the intent of turning it into a museum. There are staff in each room that are friendly and knowledgeable. There are a ton of paths to walk around in the property and there is also a museum with exhibits that rotate. Even the gift shop is impressive."
"We love coming to won’t see the mansion and gardens. However Covid killed the Manson tour. Yo they offer small private tours throughout the house at an extra cost. We rode the tram for the gardens tour and it was great! The team guide gave us a great deal of information. You can spend a lot of time walking around the different gardens. The quarry garden is cool and there are benches everywhere to enjoy everything. They even have a kids fairy garden with little houses and a giant birds nest the kids can walk in. There is a 250+ giant sycamore tree and tree whose beaches hit the ground that you can sit under on a bench."
