"About a month ago, I went to Dr. Pimentel because of a bad cough I was having. The nurse practitioner told Martha to test me for pertussis (whooping cough) because of my symptoms & the fact that there was a pertussis case in my school. She refused and instead gave me an inhaler because I was having trouble breathing. After about a month, my symptoms were worsening, so I went back to see her again. The nurse practitioner took a pertussis test behind her back, because she knew that Martha wouldn’t want one taken. When I then saw Martha, I told her that she took a test, to which she responded, “You do not have pertussis. You probably just have allergies.” I continued to ask if it was normal that I was waking up out of breath, vomiting from coughing attacks and choking. She laughed off my questions and basically told me that I was overreacting and put me on allergy medication and Flonase. Three days later, it turns out I do have whooping cough, as the nurse practitioner had said. Because of this experience, I potentially could have spread this rare, extremely contagious disease to hundreds of people. I was living with it for almost two months."
