Welcome to the Northern Arts Hotel, a boutique establishment located on Djarra Country in Castlemaine, central Victoria. Formerly known as the New Northern, this beautifully restored retreat is owned by Maggie Fooke, who brings her unique style and flair from her previous ownership of the iconic Brooklyn Arts Hotel in Fitzroy.
At the Northern Arts Hotel, we offer much more than just a room. We provide a warm and welcoming environment, perfect for those interested in the arts. Our hotel is a place where people come together for shared experiences and stimulating conversations.
Originally a country pub, the Northern Arts Hotel now features nine beautifully appointed rooms, all located upstairs and not accessible to wheelchairs. The restoration was carried out in 2012 by furniture maker Nicholas Dattner, creating a space that is honest, uncomplicated, and comfortable - a true home away from home.
Castlemaine has long been celebrated for its commitment to the arts, and the Northern Arts Hotel is no exception. In a recent article from TimeOut Melbourne magazine, the hotel was praised for its warm and charming rooms steeped in history, but it was the atmosphere that truly captured hearts. The property also features The Coolroom, a space for jazz and other musical performances, as well as salon-style events.
Located within easy strolling distance to the beautiful Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, The Mill Castlemaine artisan precinct, and the Bridge Hotel, the Northern Arts Hotel is also a great base for exploring the rich offerings of the central Victoria region.

"We came to see a music gig downstairs which was an excellent performance space and it was so easy to wander up the staircase to our room once the music had finished. It’s a beautiful building with an eclectic collection of art on every surface."
"Fabulous old school art hotel epitomising the boutique hotel feel of an earlier era. Charming, quirky, clean, thoughtful touches such as tea/coffee station in the corridor and breakfast in a delightful dining room space. Our room was facing the main road but quiet as the lovely enclosed verandah dulled any road noise. Maggie and Allen were so hospitable, we so enjoyed conversing with other guests around the fireplace and wished we had been able to attend the movie session on in the afternoon where one sat in an eclectic theatre room in huge comfy couches. Walking distance to pubs, cocktail bar, theatre, Botanic Gardens, The Mill and station. LOVED it!!"

"It's good, it's a non pretentious establishment that tries it's best to leave a nice comfy impression on you. Stayed in the boyd room, it was pretty comfortable. The breakfast was also lovely, felt like something you'd snack on at home. Events played through the night like a band and poetry reading. Left feeling refreshed."
"The owner and manager, Maggie and Alan were very friendly and helpful. Our room was called the 'Heysen Room' (after Hans Heysen)The room with private bathroom was excellent. The room had polished timber floors with rugs, air conditioning, TV, nice clean beds, bathrobes. paintings on the walls. A very nice ambience. There is a communal fridge you can use. The continental breakfast is excellent and included tea, coffee, toast, cereals, yoghurt and fruit. All in all a very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay in Castlemaine."
