About the Business

Welcome to Mathematics & Physics at the University of Tasmania, located in the beautiful city of Hobart, Sandy Bay. As an establishment and point of interest, our institution is dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in science, technology, and mathematics, which are crucial for the future of Australia.
At the School of Natural Sciences, we offer specialized teaching across a wide range of science disciplines, from undergraduate to PhD level. Whether you choose to focus your studies in one area or explore multiple disciplines, the choice is yours. Our goal is to provide you with a strong foundation of knowledge through theoretical and experimental training, enabling you to become leaders in technical and scientific fields.
As the powerhouse of the University of Tasmania, Natural Sciences drive research and teaching at both the undergraduate and PhD levels. We also play a vital role in growing new industries for the state. Our dedicated staff and students in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Mathematics collaborate closely, working alongside our colleagues in the Central Science Laboratory and across the College of Sciences and Engineering to carry out world-class research in numerous specialty areas.
When it comes to research infrastructure, we boast some of the best facilities in Australia. From powerful lasers to sensitive gas-chromatograph-mass-spectrometers and the largest array of radio telescopes in the southern hemisphere, we provide our students with access to cutting-edge equipment. Our biology and geology students also have the opportunity to conduct field work in Tasmania's unique natural environment, as well as at significant sites both within Australia and around the world.
Within the Discipline of Biological Sciences, students and researchers strive to expand our understanding of life and living organisms. Majors in zoology, plant science, genetics, and ecology allow for the creation and dissemination of knowledge in these areas. Chemistry, on the other hand, focuses on the chemical and physical properties of substances, providing training in analytical and synthetic chemistry, as well as environmental, materials, and biological chemistry.
Geology encompasses the study of the Earth, including tectonic processes, mineral and petroleum generation, and environmental geology. Students can explore areas such as Geophysics, Geochemistry, Petroleum Geology, and Economic Geology. Mathematics, although traditionally associated with the physical sciences, plays a crucial role in fields ranging from finance and coding to weather and climate modeling. Its applications are vast and can be utilized in various disciplines, including psychology, chemistry, engineering, biology, commerce, and information technology.
If you have a passion for studying the natural sciences and are seeking a pathway into university, we have options available for you at the University College. Regardless of your educational background, work history, or life experience, we welcome you to join us in pursuing your passion for science.
Physics, as a discipline, extends and enhances our understanding of other scientific fields. It serves as the foundation for engineering and technology, contributing to the technological infrastructure and providing a basis for understanding biology, chemistry, geology, and other physical and biomedical sciences.
We are proud to have several research centers and institutes affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences, contributing to groundbreaking discoveries and advancements in various scientific fields.
Lastly, we would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the palawa/pakana peoples of lutruwita, upon whose lands the University of Tasmania stands. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
