About the Business
Welcome to Lanyon Homestead, a captivating establishment and museum located in Tharwa, Australia. Situated on Tharwa Drive, this historical gem is a point of interest and a popular tourist attraction in Canberra.
Step back in time as you experience the restored 1850s homestead, which offers a glimpse into the past before Canberra was established. Immerse yourself in the fascinating stories of the families who once lived and worked in this enchanting place.
The journey begins with James Wright, who was advised by his doctor to emigrate to New South Wales for his health. In 1835, he purchased a block of land along the banks of Murrumbidgee, alongside his friend John Lanyon and his brother, William. Together, they were allocated convicts to help farm the land.
However, tragedy struck when Lanyon had to return to England and Wright's brother was killed in a shooting accident. With the added challenges of drought and economic depression, Wright was left to work the property on his own. Uncover more of this captivating story as you explore Lanyon Homestead.
One of the highlights of your visit will be the stunning gardens that surround the homestead. Take a tour with Lanyon's Head Gardener during the Grow Your Garden Plant Fair and discover the beauty and secrets of the gardens.
To ensure the preservation of the house interiors and collections, museum entry is available through guided tours only. Plan your visit in advance and book your spot to make the most of your time at Lanyon Homestead.

Reviews
"Lovely grounds. Only 3 stars because the home was closed for renovations with no notification on the website to indicate. Out buildings were open and tours of the grounds still running however after a 3.5 hour drive from Sydney it was incredibly disappointing not to have any warning that the museum would be closed."
"The homestead and cafe experience exceeded our expectations. Wonderful piece of colonial history, beautiful gardens."
"Beautiful well maintained garden with stunning views over the mountains. Great condition homestead to see some history. Nice café with homemade food."
"Had one the most amazing sunny and beautiful brunch. Food is good and delicious. The ambiance and spread of the homestead is beyond words. The whole place looks as if some one created from a painting. The lush green stretch, wonderful gardens , dreamy mountain line in background and the giant fairytale pumpkins - hard to pick which will blow your mind. If you have kids they will enjoy as well in the open green fields. This place is a must go ."
