Welcome to Lions at Perth Zoo, located in the beautiful City of South Perth, Western Australia. As an establishment and point of interest, our zoo is dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience for visitors while also playing a crucial role in lion conservation.
Our brand new African Lion exhibit, which is part of a $3.3 million upgrade, offers a unique opportunity to observe and learn about these majestic big cats. The first half of the exhibit, recently unveiled, features a thatched African themed hut surrounded by native African plantings. Through large viewing windows and moulds of lion paw prints, visitors can appreciate the sheer size of the lions and gain insights into the ongoing research and conservation efforts to protect this species in the wild.
We are proud to announce that the second stage of the exhibit will commence construction soon and is expected to be complete by mid-2018. This expansion will more than double the size of our current lion exhibit and include a dedicated breeding area with indoor dens and a separate outdoor space for a breeding lioness and her cubs. By providing a safe and comfortable environment, we aim to support regional and global breeding programs and contribute to the preservation of lions.
It is important to note that lions are facing unprecedented pressures in the wild, with only approximately 20,000 remaining and already extinct in 26 African countries. With this in mind, our zoo strives to be a safety-net against extinction for these incredible animals. By visiting our new exhibit, you can learn about lion conservation and discover how you can actively participate in protecting these amazing creatures.
In addition to the African Lion exhibit, Lions at Perth Zoo offers Close Encounters, where visitors can go behind-the-scenes and get up-close with our rare and extraordinary animals. Your support is crucial in enabling us to continue our vital work in saving threatened wildlife. Rest assured that 100% of your donation goes directly towards saving species from extinction, as Perth Zoo covers all administration costs.
