Japanese Garden
Mount Coot-Tha Road, Toowong QLD 4066
About the Business

Welcome to the Japanese Garden, located at the picturesque Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha in Toowong. This establishment is not only a point of interest, but also a must-visit tourist attraction in Australia.
Originally showcased at the Japanese Pavilion during Expo '88 held at South Bank, the Japanese Garden was generously gifted to the people of Brisbane and officially opened its doors in February 1989. Renowned landscape architect Kenzo Ogata, one of Japan's leading designers, meticulously crafted this garden with the theme of ‘tsuki-yama-chisen’ or 'mountain-pond-stream'.
As you explore this serene oasis, you will be captivated by the harmonious blend of stone, water, ornaments, arbours, paths, and vegetation. Japanese gardens are known for their evergreen landscapes, and this garden is no exception. It boasts a unique combination of native and exotic plants carefully selected to thrive in Brisbane's subtropical climate.
The garden's design features single trunked trees gracefully leaning over the tranquil waters or pathways, creating a sense of tranquility and beauty. Skilled gardeners meticulously prune shrubs to create an open and spacious atmosphere while framing breathtaking views throughout the garden.
To get a glimpse of the Japanese Garden's enchanting beauty, you can browse through our photo gallery, either as a captivating slideshow or by exploring individual photos in our dedicated Japanese Garden set on Council's Flickr account.
As we invite you to experience the Japanese Garden, we also acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders, both past and present, as well as those who will shape the future. At the Japanese Garden, nature and culture seamlessly intertwine, offering a serene and captivating experience for all visitors.

Reviews
"I went to the garden today. I sat down and watched the beautiful view for an hour."
"Outstanding garden, a must to view. Tranquil pond reflecting blossoms and flowering lotus. Wonderful pavilion placed to relax and enjoy the view. Right next-door is the Bonsai House completing the setting."
"Tranquil, beautiful and peaceful. Other areas surrounding this garden are well maintained and just as beautiful to explore."
"An absolutely stunning part of the gardens with manicured lawns and plants, trickling water, pavilions and pathways. The Bonsai House is currently being redeveloped, but I'm certain it will be worth the minor disruption."
"Beautiful Japanese Garden. So many wild animals if you are quietly observing. We even saw a snake changing its skin. This is such a magical place. Be sure to take your time and enjoy this thoughtful designed Garden. Especially in the early morning hours life awakens here."
