Mernda Community House

Welcome to Mernda Community House, your Neighbourhood House in Australia! Located at 2 Heals Road in Mernda, we are an establishment and point of interest dedicated to celebrating and supporting community, and enhancing health, wellbeing, and community connections in Mernda, Doreen, and the surrounding areas.

As a Neighbourhood House, our goal is to bring people together in their local community through social, educational, recreational, and support activities. We use a unique community development approach to connect, learn, and contribute. At Mernda Community House, you'll have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain knowledge, volunteer, get involved in projects and events, and much more. Plus, you'll have the chance to meet others in your neighbourhood and form lasting connections.

We are open Wednesday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm. Feel free to drop in and find out what's happening at your Community House. You can also explore our classes and activities listed below to see how you can get involved. We are always open to new program and event ideas, and we love supporting individuals with a passion that needs a place to grow.

It's important to note that there are six other Neighbourhood Houses in the City of Whittlesea. If you want to learn more about all of us, you can visit the NHVic website.

At Mernda Community House, we offer a wide range of programs and activities, including arts and crafts, health and wellbeing, gardening and sustainability, English classes, Homework Club, playgroups, community events, and much more. We strive to provide a diverse range of options to cater to different interests and needs.

As a program of Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC), we can also refer or link you to any of WCC's many services. Whether you need financial assistance, legal advice, volunteering opportunities, or social/support groups, we're here to help.

To ensure that we stay connected with our neighborhood, we have the Mernda Community House Advisory Group. This group consists of representatives from within the community who help us stay true to the community's vision for the house. They assist us in fundraising, organizing community events, and ensuring that we meet the needs and aspirations of the community.

At Mernda Community House, we are guided by community development principles and practice. This means that we actively seek ways to work with the community and support individuals in achieving their goals and aspirations. We strive to make our programs accessible by offering them for free or at low cost, so that everyone can participate. We value diversity and provide a welcoming place for all. We are aware of the social and economic barriers that exist and continuously look for ways to challenge and overcome them.

As a not-for-profit organization, our work is made possible by the generosity of kind and compassionate donors. Every donation we receive goes directly towards supporting our community, especially those who have limited access to social and economic resources.

We are also an official community outreach provider for the State Government's $250 Power Saving Bonus. We assist community members in receiving this one-off payment to help ease energy bill stress and find better energy deals. This payment is available to all Victorian households as of July 1, 2022.

In addition to our in-person offerings, we also provide online classes. For example, our gardening classes cover a range of fantastic gardening know-how, from weed identification to building healthy soil and pruning fruit trees. Register now to expand your gardening skills.

If you're interested in learning how to spin, dye, and knit with wool, join Barbara Marshall in our six-weekly classes. Limited spots are available, so make sure to book in soon!

For those looking to stay active during the colder months, we offer Yoga (advanced and beginners), Pilates (Zoom), and Bootcamp classes led by Shweta and Chrissy. Our classes and sessions run from Tuesdays to Fridays, so enroll now to join the fun.

Additionally, we are proud to host Espresso Legal @ Mernda Community House, where you can receive free legal advice while enjoying a cup of coffee.

In the spirit of reconciliation and Truth Telling, we acknowledge and pay our respects to the Ancestors, Elders, and families of the Wurundjeri Willum peoples of the Kulin Nations. They are the traditional owners of the land on which Mernda Community House is located. We recognize that this land holds age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation, and renewal of the Kulin people's living culture. We value the deep knowledge embedded within the Aboriginal communities and acknowledge that Sovereignty has never been ceded.
