About the Business

Ballintubber Abbey

Ballintubber Abbey is a spiritual and cultural institution located in the heart of the idyllic Irish countryside. Situated at Abbey, Ballintober, Co. Mayo, F12 W584, Ireland, this historic site has stood for over 750 years as a sanctuary of worship and tranquility. Built in 1216 AD, it is one of the oldest continually operating abbeys in all of Europe.

As you step inside this peaceful sanctuary, you are immediately struck by its rich history and its serene beauty. The abbey's stone walls transport you back through time as you take in the magnificently preserved medieval architecture. The nave, chancel and transept all radiate an air of simplicity and a sense of quiet reflection.

Ballintubber Abbey is a vital part of the spiritual life of the community in County Mayo, with its iconic façade serving as a symbol of tradition and faith for generations. The abbey has witnessed countless Masses, baptisms, marriages and funerals since its founding over 750 years ago, and continues to provide a spiritual home to pilgrims and visitors from all over the world.

Despite its age, the abbey is far from static. Over the years, it has been restored and rejuvenated, with the stonework and stained glass windows being meticulously preserved to ensure its heritage remains intact. There is an exceptional collection of artefacts, relics and stained-glass windows that adorn the interior, several of which date back to its founding period.

In addition to its religious significance, Ballintubber Abbey is also a cultural hub, showcasing performances, concerts, festivals and events that celebrate the rich Irish heritage and traditions.

Whether you're seeking solitude, spiritual renewal, or simply an appreciation for a bygone era, Ballintubber Abbey is a must-see destination. The warmth of its welcome, the majesty of its surroundings, and the beauty of its architecture make it a true sanctuary for the soul.

"So glad we added Ballintubber Abbey as a stop on our journey! The site, the church, all of it equally beautiful as historically rich. The stained glass windows, the architecture, all wonderfully explained and curated by Pauline! She made it all even more enjoyable with her knowledge and friendly conversation! Thank you again -- we had a wonderful time!"

"The ruins of the abbey are behind the new church. You can't see them from the main road. They are nice but not spectacular. Okay if you are passing by, but I would have bèen dissapointed had I come here specifically to see the abbey."
