About the Business

The Chocolatarium

Welcome to The Chocolatarium, where chocolate meets history, science, art, and, of course, pleasure. Our establishment is located in a charming historical building on 3-5 Cranston Street, in the heart of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. We invite you to step into our world of cocoa and discover the fascinating story of chocolate and its makers from around the globe.

As a museum and educational center, The Chocolatarium offers a unique and interactive experience that caters to all ages and backgrounds. You will embark on a journey of senses, starting with the raw cacao bean, which you will learn to touch, smell, taste, and roast. Our expert guides will take you through the process of chocolate-making, from grinding the bean to tempering and molding the bars. You will have the chance to create your own bespoke chocolate bar with a variety of natural ingredients, such as fruits, nuts, spices, and edible flowers.

At The Chocolatarium, we believe that education and entertainment go hand in hand, so we have designed our exhibits to be fun and engaging. You can see and touch antique chocolate molds, vintage advertisements, and packaging designs. You can also participate in workshops that teach you how to pair chocolate with wine, tea, coffee, or whisky. Our kids' activities include making chocolate treats, playing memory games, and watching a chocolate fountain.

The Chocolatarium is not only an educational center but also a store and a cafe. You can shop for a wide range of artisanal chocolates from around the world, as well as handmade truffles, pralines, and bonbons made on-site. You can also buy gifts, souvenirs, and books related to chocolate. Our cafe offers a cozy and relaxing atmosphere where you can indulge in hot chocolate, coffee, tea, cakes, and desserts while admiring the view of the Old Town.

As a point of interest and a tourist attraction, The Chocolatarium has received many accolades and positive reviews from locals and visitors alike. We are proud to serve as an ambassador of Scottish and British chocolate culture and to support small and ethical chocolate producers. Our travel agency offers customized chocolate tours, where you can visit cocoa farms, artisanal factories, and cultural landmarks related to chocolate history around the world.

Whether you are a chocolate lover, a history buff, a foodie, or a curious traveler, The Chocolatarium is a must-visit destination in Edinburgh. Book your ticket or join our membership now and get ready for an unforgettable experience!

"This was probably my favourite part of my trip to Edinburgh! The chocolate tour is SO much fun. Our guide, Katie, was really friendly and funny. You get so much free chocolate, hot chocolate, etc to taste. It’s such good value for money, and you even get to take home your own bar you make!! A really great way to spend some time if it’s raining in the city, a real highlight in Edinburgh."

"We attended the chocolate and wine experience on Dec. 2, 2022. The whole presentation was very well done, very interesting, and a lot of fun, and worth the price of the Wine & Chocolate Experience. Our host was wonderful. Very personable and friendly. We are from the Massachusetts, in United States, and this was our first trip to Scotland. We found out about the Chocolatarium on line while searching for things to do in Edinburgh. The tour and hands on participation lasted about 1.5 hours. You got to make your own chocolate candy and take it with you at the end. We had a very nice time there. Thanks to all the staff there. Bob & Sue Massachusetts, USA"

"Had such a fantastic time at the The Chocolatarium. All the chocolate was delicious - from the rich hot chocolate we were given first, to the ruby chocolate drops we were given at the end. The talk about chocolate was really interesting and timed well. Making my own chocolate was fun and the choice of toppings/fillings was good. They had a choice of milk, dark or white chocolate to make. The third part of the tour was in the tasting room. They gave us 4 chocolates from around the world and it was really interesting to see the differences in their taste. The only chocolate I didn't like was the 100% cacao - it was very bitter. We then got to choose as many different chocolates as we wanted to taste. Some of the flavours were very unique, whilst they had others that were common like raspberry and orange. Very good value for money and a fantastic experience for anyone visiting Edinburgh."

"INCREDIBLE! We loved every single second of the tour, it was better than we ever imagined. A great balance between facts, history and then more practical aspects like the chocolate making and then tasting sessions. All included in the price. So worth the money for sure. Katie was an incredible tour guide. So full of life and kept it super interactive and exciting!"
